The History of Roofing Nails
Roofer’s nails have evolved over time to meet the demands of their job. When attaching roofing felt or shingles to a roof, roofers use special nails called roofing nails.
The head is what differentiates roofing nails from other types. The head of roofing nails is larger and more flat than that of common nails. This is to secure the roofing material and prevent rain from entering through the nail hole.
The larger head makes roofing nails ideal for installing tile backer boards and drywall in bathrooms. To waterproof the hole, some roofing nails are equipped with a rubber washer or plastic washer. The sizes of roofing nails vary from 1 inch to 1 3/4 inches.
Galvanized iron and aluminum are used to make roof nails, which are often exposed to the elements for years. Galvanized roofing nails are coated with zinc or steel to protect them from rust. It doesn’t need to be galvanized because aluminum is already resistant to rust. Rusty nails can eventually snap, which will cause leaks and ugly stains to the roof.
Some roofing nails have a short spiral shank, or threads that grab the wood sheathing underneath the roofing felt and the shingles. The spiral shank and threads keep the nail in place, preventing it from loosening or coming out. Tiles can fall off roofs if roofing nails are removed.
